The market

:

Because no school and no airline can fully predict how many pilots are need, where and when it is important to keep an eye on what the market is doing. After all you want to be sure you make the right decision before investing in your education.

The most widely used independent source is the Boeing Commercial market outlook.
According to the 2010 outlook the largest growth will be in the Asia Pacific, with a requirement for 180,600 pilots. Within Asia, China will experience the greatest growth with 70,600 pilots. North America will need 97,350 pilots, Europe 94,800, Africa 13,200, the Middle East 32,700, Latin America 37,000 pilots, and the CIS 11,000. This totals to appr 460.000 pilots over 20 years.

Now assume that they are 25% off and that this requirement is evenly spread it means that there will still be a need of 17.250 pilots per annum worldwide based on the projected production of the main manufacturer. Looking at Europe alone there will be a need 3.500 pilots per annum.

The main growth over the last 5 years has been in the Middle East and Asia and in response Stella Aviation Academy has started a joint venture in Turkey to supply all the key Turkish operators. In the last year alone 30 graduates of Stella have joined three Turkish operators and we hope to announce some additional placements of Stella graduates in Turkey in the next few months. Keep an eye out for our newsletters! (link newsletter)

In response to the current crises Stella has limited it’s intake in Europe from its capacity of 200 students per annum to only 120 and has been able to place all its graduates until mid 2010. Stella graduates has a small waiting list with an average wait of approximate 6 months. Although it is not nice the waiting list is nowhere near the 5 year waiting lists as they were common in the 1970s. The market in Europe is slowly picking up with a number of large German and UK carriers starting to hire again.

Notable exceptions are carriers in Turley, the United Arab Emirates, China and India who have continued hiring throughout the crises. As a Stella graduate you will have been trained to meet the highest international standards and with the ability to adapt to carriers worldwide.
(Netherlands website only: There has been no significant hiring in the last 2 years and the demise of Denim Air and the current problems at Martinair have not made it likely that there will be any significant hiring in the Netherlands in the near term. Should this stop you? If your only dream is working in the Netherlands in the short term maybe.
